How to Get Ancient Greatsword & Upgrade to Ragnarok | FF Resonance

The Colosseum gate slides up and you feel the crowd’s breath hold with you. For a moment the Ancient Greatsword is a rumor, a single line on a looted screen that could change Rain’s game plan. I wasted an hour learning the cheap, repeatable tricks—so you don’t have to.

I’ve chased Legendary weapons across Square Enix titles long enough to know when a fight is testing patience rather than skill. You want Rain’s Ultima Weapon? Start by getting the Ancient Greatsword, then force it through its trial until it becomes Ragnarok — and later Ragnarok+ if you’re stubborn enough.

Queues at stadiums cluster at the gates. How to get the Ancient Greatsword in Final Fantasy Resonance

You grab the Colosseum key by winning one specific match in Grandshelt’s arena: the third Fledgling battle. That bout throws four level 32 opponents at you — two Balaurs, a Blood Worm, and a Simurgh — and the prize is the Ancient Greatsword.

The Colosseum opens when Chapter 4 begins. Step right from Grandshelt’s main square to enter. Two penalties matter: you get no EXP or MRP from these fights, and HP/MP won’t auto-recover after the match — so plan heals and resources like a gambler counting cards.

How do I get the Ancient Greatsword in Final Fantasy Resonance?

Practical play: bring Lasswell + Firion as your damage pair and keep Rain on threat duty. Put the two Balaurs to sleep with a Sleep Knife (or similar tool) while Rain uses Provoke to soak hits. Focus-fire the non-sleeping targets first, then clear the Balaurs. That routine turns an annoying level 32 slog into a five-minute skirmish.

Small tips that matter: equip status-affinity gear if you have it, slot a tonic or two in case the Blood Worm starts spamming, and save before the fight if you like safe retries. This fight rewards patience and low-risk tactics over brute force.

A lonely lighthouse sits off a map’s edge. How to upgrade the Ancient Greatsword to Ragnarok and Ragnarok+ in FF Resonance

The Ancient Greatsword arrives as a fragile curiosity — just 1 Physical and 1 Magic Attack — because its power sleeps until you complete the trial. Treat the upgrade like a two-step ritual: first get Ragnarok at the Chamber of Arms, then defeat a tougher Alpherg later to reach Ragnarok+.

Where is the Chamber of Arms for Ragnarok?

Head north to the island above Dirnado. You can reach it only after you get the airship (Chapter 5). On that island you’ll find the Greatsword altar: interact to start the trial and face the Alpherg boss.

How do I beat Alpherg to upgrade the Ancient Greatsword?

The first Alpherg fight is level 50 and comes in two phases. Your goal is to survive the Reflect-focused mechanics while dishing damage during windows. Bring spells or items that bypass or counter Reflect; cover your healers and avoid over-committing single-target nukes into a mirrored wall. Defeat Alpherg and the Ancient Greatsword becomes Ragnarok: 191 Physical DMG, 99 Magic DMG, plus a 25% boost to stagger and damage for non-elemental attacks.

Defeating Alpherg also gives 30,000 EXP, 18,000 Gil (~€18), over 200 MRP, and a Mist X-Ether. If you finish the main story, you can re-challenge a level 75 Alpherg to upgrade Ragnarok into Ragnarok+, which improves stats and adds the Break the Limit effect.

The trial is a chessboard where one mistaken move costs the queen.

If you prefer watching strategy instead of guessing, check community clips on YouTube or threads on Reddit for phase timers and ability cues. Moyens I/O and other outlets often post visual guides; Square Enix’ own patch notes can affect boss behavior, so keep an eye on official channels.

So you’re standing at the Colosseum gate with a ticket and a plan: will you grind the easy match and forge a Legendary for Rain, or will you let the sword gather dust in a chest and argue about theorycrafting online?
