The cauldron fizzed and the numbers on my screen jumped to 40 — the vial clouded, and the hoped-for blade never formed. You feel that stomach-drop when a stack of materials looks right but the roll hands you common sludge. I learned to count totals before I ever hit Craft again.
Wizard Alchemy Potion Crafting Guide
On real workbenches, five jars decide the meal; in-game, five slots decide your spell.
I’ll walk you through the system so you stop wasting rare drops. Every ingredient carries a Magic score (for example, Blueberry 3) and every potion has a Magic threshold (for example, Ice Spike 10). You place up to five materials into the Alchemy menu. The sum of their Magic scores determines which potions you qualify to roll for — and your chance to hit a specific potion.
Mechanics, quick and practical:
- Each material has a Magic score; each potion requires a Magic value.
- Hit a potion’s Magic value with your total and you gain a percent chance to craft it.
- Increasing the total raises odds toward higher-rarity results; overshooting lowers the chance for the lower-tier potion because you now qualify for rarer ones.
- Quick-time events at the end determine Purity. Your accuracy bumps the potion’s stats — damage, duration, or utility.
Think of the totals like tuning a radio — get it just right and the station comes in clear. That’s where planning beats blind throwing.
How does potion crafting work in Wizard Alchemy?
Combine up to five materials. If their summed Magic meets or exceeds a potion’s requirement, you gain a chance to make that potion; the closer you stay below the next potion’s threshold, the higher that chance becomes. RNG still decides the roll, but you control the odds.
Do Elemental Shards increase my chance to make an elemental spell?
Yes. Elemental Shards (Ice, Fire, Earth, etc.) have no Magic score but add an elemental bias — roughly a +50% chance toward the shard’s element, provided your total qualifies you for that elemental spell. Use only one shard per craft: adding more doesn’t boost elemental odds and simply lowers your Magic total because shards contribute 0.
What’s the best way to aim for a specific potion?
Aim for a total between the potion’s required Magic and one less than the next potion’s requirement. For Ice Spike (10), that means any total from 10 up to 39 gives the best percentage for Ice Spike; many players shoot for the mid-range (around 20) to avoid wasting higher-value materials.

Materials stack like coins on a scale: a single high-value piece can tip the outcome. Use your 3–5 low-value fillers to hit a target range and reserve the big drops for when you need to reach a higher tier.
If you want extra help: the Steam community hub and Reddit threads (search r/WizardAlchemy) host drop maps and sample builds; Twitch streamers and Moyens I/O guides frequently post quick recipes. If you bought Wizard Alchemy on Steam ($19.99; €20), those community resources repay the price in saved materials.
