Valheim Deep North Guide: How to Use Ancient Altars

I dropped my torch and watched the altar breathe. The coal in its bowl shimmered with an old scene I couldn’t quite reach. You stand there, and the map in your head rearranges itself.

I’ve spent nights chasing those pulses across the Deep North. Read this and you won’t waste a single trip—I’ll tell you where to go, what to bring, and how to turn three pieces of memory into the weapons that change a playthrough.

From a weathered ruin on a ridge you can smell smoke: Requirements to Activate an Ancient Altar in Valheim

Memorial Coal is the single ticket the Ancient Altars accept. Memorial Coal is a heartbeat in stone. It doesn’t trade, craft, or buff—its only use is to call an Ancestor.

Where you find it matters. The Deep North holds the Fortress of Mörkhalla and smaller ruins where Memorial Coal spawns. You will often need a Grappling Hook to reach ledges and entrances that are otherwise sealed off.

To access the lower vaults of Mörkhalla you will need an Intricate Key. That means mining Ice, building a Frost Kiln, producing Liquid Frost, and running the Frost Foundry. The key process is mechanical: resource > kiln > foundry.

Key drops vary by enemy. Kill Elaking or the Eyeless One for a key mould. Kill Hexen to collect keys directly. Once you can open Mörkhalla’s lower door, the vaults will let you mine Memorial Coal, fight Krigen, or smash ritual brazier pits to recover more.

You’ll need at least three Memorial Coal to perform a reliable altar activation and have a buffer for mistakes or contesting players on a multiplayer server. Use the Valheim Wiki for coordinates tips, and check Steam Workshop or NexusMods for quality-of-life mods if you run frequent runs.

Can you use Ancient Altars more than once in Valheim?

Yes. The altar is reusable as long as you bring Memorial Coal. Each activation consumes one piece and summons an Ancestor.

Can you activate the Ancient Altar multiple times at once?

You can place several Memorial Coal in sequence and trigger multiple summons, but every Ancestor will target you. I recommend summoning one at a time unless you want an arena fight.

Are Ancient Altars in Valheim always found in the Deep North?

Ancient Altars spawn only within the Deep North biome. Their exact placement is seed-dependent, so they might be coastal or tucked inland in your save.

Stand in front of an altar with Memorial Coal somewhere in your eight inventory slots and interact. The altar consumes one piece and an Ancestor appears. You can repeat this as long as you keep feeding the altar.

Defeating Ancestors can drop rare crafting bits like Thunderblood Essence and Frostfire Essence. Those materials let you craft weapons that challenge bosses such as Kall Fimbulbringer. An Ancestor is a walking thunderbolt; expect heavy, directed attacks and occasional burst damage.

Tactical checklist:

  • Bring at least three Memorial Coal per planned fight. One summons one enemy; three gives wiggle room.
  • Wear frost protection and a solid shield. Potions and a bow shorten the encounter when the Ancestor uses ranged patterns.
  • Summon one at a time unless you’re prepared for a multi-wave confrontation.

For streamers and creators: highlight your Mörkhalla runs on Steam, clip fights to YouTube, or post route tips on the Valheim subreddit—Audiences eat ritual-risk content. If you need mod tools, the NexusMods community and the Valheim Wiki remain the most reliable references; Iron Gate AB is the developer to watch for patch notes and balance updates.

Across my runs I saw three Ancestor builds: ranged, sword-and-shield, and axe-only. Each drops the same essence pool but forces you to alter your approach. Seed variation means an altar may be a five-minute sail from your starting island or a cold trek inland—the map can be generous or stingy.

You now know where to go, how to prepare, and what you get. Will you risk the flames for the best weapon components or leave the memories untouched?
