I sat down with Karthik Venkateshan, Line Producer at EA Sports FC, to talk about The Grounds — the free, open-world addition arriving in FC 27 on Sept. 18. What follows is what I learned: how it grew from community requests, where it fits against Ultimate Team and Pro Clubs, and what players can expect from live events and optional spending.

What is The Grounds in FC 27?
The Grounds is a free-to-access open-world hub inside EA Sports FC 27 that blends third-person social play with small-sided football. Think public squares, organized Club activities, and seasonal events all stitched together so you can meet, compete, and customize your identity without leaving the game.
My Clubmates argued over pitch types during a break.
At launch you’ll find three regions: Parkside (UK), Montclair (France), and Zeiza (Argentina). Each one borrows from real football cultures — Parkside’s brick parks, Montclair’s cage-style urban courts, Zeiza’s patchy Potrero pitches — and they’re built to feel distinct.
Karthik said those three countries were chosen to give a range of surfaces and social flavours out of the gate. The Grounds is intended to expand beyond them, with new regions and seasonal content arriving over time through live events and campaign-themed takeovers — first examples include Champions League and Halloween-style experiences.
Is The Grounds free in FC 27?
Yes. The Grounds is free to access inside FC 27. You can earn cosmetics, seasonal rewards, and progression through gameplay, objectives, and events. There are optional purchases to speed progression or buy looks, but spending isn’t required to enjoy the mode.

Karthik described Mentors, seasonal rewards, and Campaign Takeovers as hooks to keep The Grounds feeling fresh. The team intends to run events tied to football’s calendar — Champions League moments, cultural holidays — and rotate objectives and rewards across Seasons.
The Grounds will receive regular content updates similar in rhythm to other live modes. Expect themed events, fresh challenges, and cosmetic drops that lean on culture and football moments. The goal is simple: more reasons to return, gather your Club, and play together.
