How to Add Friends in Minecraft Java Edition (Multiplayer Guide)

I joined a friend’s Minecraft Java game and froze when I couldn’t find them in my menus. You probably know that feeling—the map is shared but the shortcut to play together is missing. I want to show you the exact few clicks that fix that.

I’ve been following Minecraft since the Mojang days and I use the Minecraft Launcher daily, so I’ll walk you through what actually matters and what’s just noise.

The Friends toggle hides in plain sight — then it becomes obvious

Menus in games love to hide things until you press the right button. In Java Edition the friends list is off by default, and turning it on is as simple as flipping a light switch.

Here are the two places you can activate it:

  • From the main menu, select the Friends tab. If this is your first time, a Turn ON prompt appears — accept it and the Friends tab will remain on the main screen permanently.
  • Or open Options (bottom-left), go to the Online section (upper right), and toggle the friends list on.

You can toggle the friends feature on or off anytime through either method. If you ever run into weird behavior, sign out of the Minecraft Launcher and sign back in (especially if you use Xbox Live or a Microsoft account).

How do you add friends in Minecraft Java Edition?

Think of the friends list as a backstage pass to your worlds. Once it’s enabled, click the Friends icon on the main menu, type a friend’s exact Minecraft username into the box, and send the request.

They must accept from their end: have them open Friends, switch to the Requests tab, and accept your invite. After acceptance, their name appears in your list and you’re both linked.

A quick reality: people mis-type usernames all the time

Typos and changed usernames are the usual blockers when requests fail. Double-check spelling and capitalization — Minecraft names are specific.

If a request doesn’t arrive, ask your friend to sign out and back into the Minecraft Launcher or check that their Microsoft/Xbox Live account is active. Mojang’s account migration and Microsoft link can cause hiccups, so confirming account status saves time.

You’ll notice invites are placed where you already visit — the in-game menu

Once someone is on your friends list you can invite them directly into any world you’ve opened. No extra hosting software required.

To invite:

  • Load the world you want to play in.
  • Open the in-game menu and click the Friends icon (it appears while the game is running).
  • Find your friend in the list and select Invite. They’ll get a notification and can join if their settings allow.

How do I invite friends in multiplayer?

Invites are instant through the friends UI. If a friend can’t join, check their privacy settings on Xbox Live and whether any mods or server plugins are blocking connections.

A plain truth: you don’t have to rent a world to play together

You no longer need to pay for a hosted world or run a separate server to invite friends. You can invite people directly into your single-player world while it’s open.

Servers and commercial hosted services remain useful for persistent communities, mods, and larger groups — but for casual co-op you can keep it local and instant.

Do you need a server or subscription to play with friends in Minecraft Java Edition?

Short answer: not for small sessions. If you want 24/7 access, cross-play with bedrock players, or heavy mod support, a dedicated server or paid host may be worth the cost.
